Google Local Locates Businesses in a Specific Geographic Area

Google searches and reports about the entire worldwide web. Whereas, Google Local lets searchers find an auto parts store within walking distance. It locates neighborhood stores and services by searching billions of Internet pages, then cross-checking those results with Yellow Pages data to pinpoint the local resources. The searcher gets access to the most—and most relevant—results for their search.

Google’s approach to Local Search relies on Yellow Page and business-directory information from third-party providers. Then it integrates that with information about individual businesses from Google’s main webpage index. They also make it easy for the business owner to correct or modify their own data.

Access Google Local search results in two ways

1.  From the Google homepage—Simply include either a city name and state or zip code with the search terms. Relevant local business listings appear at the top of the page, next to a Google Local compass icon

2.  From the Google Local homepage—Enter the desired business category (such as “romantic restaurants”) in the “What” field and the full address, city and state, or zip code in the “Where” field. Then click “Google Search.” Relevant local business listings and a map of their locations appears on the page. To narrow the search area, click a distance value in the top right corner of the page
